HomeMy WebLinkAboutEXECUTIVE ORDER_ MAYOR DAVIS- SHARON LAFAYE JONES AUGUSTA t. l GEORGIA EXECUTIVE ORDER BY THE MAYOR: FLAGS ON CITY BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS ORDERED LOWERED TO HALF STAFF WHEREAS: The residents of the City of Augusta Richmond County, along with her family and friends mourn the passing of Sharon Lafaye Jones aka"The Lady James Brown"; and WHEREAS: Sharon Lafaye Jones was born on May 4, 1956, in Augusta, Georgia,the youngest of six children to Ella Mae(Nee Price)and Charlie Jones; and WHEREAS: Ms.Jones worked as a corrections officer at Riker's Island and as an armored car guard for the Wells Fargo Corporation while she pursued her passion of becoming a high- energy, expressive classic and funk soul singer; and WHEREAS: Ms. Jones found success with her backing band"the Dap-Kings" in 1996. She recorded six albums. Her 2014 album titled"Give the People What They Want"was nominated for a Grammy in the Best R&B album category; and WHEREAS: Ms.Jones will forever be remembered for her authentic voice that connected with her fans and for the many prestigious appearances on-screen and abroad. The documentary titled"Miss Sharon Jones", is noted for her candidness in publicizing her battle with cancer that inspired others; and WHEREAS: Ms.Jones is recognized and revered for her artistic talent,incomparable performances, influential recordings and worldwide contribution as a musical pioneer by the City of Augusta,Georgia; and NOW,THEREFORE,IN HONOR AND AS A MARK OF RESPECT FOR THE MEMORY OF SHARON LAFAYE JONES,"THE LADY JAMES BROWN", PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME AS THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF AUGUSTA,RICHMOND COUNTY,IT IS HEREBY ORDERED: That the flag of the United States and flag of the Great State of Georgia be flown half- staff on all City buildings and grounds until sunrise,Tuesday,December 20th,2016. This 16t day of December,2016. avis,Jr. Mayor
