EXECUTIVE ORDER
BY THE MAYOR:
FLAGS ON CITY BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS ORDERED
LOWERED TO HALF STAFF
WHEREAS: The residents of the City of Augusta Richmond County, along with his family and
friends mourn the passing of former Mayor of Augusta Lewis"POP"A.Newman; and
WHEREAS: Former City of Augusta Mayor,Lewis"POP"A.Newman,the fifth child born to
Morgan and Nora Newman on April 18, 1919 in Augusta,Georgia and was married to
Ouida"TEENY"Tucker Newman for 71 years until her death in 2013; and
WHEREAS: Mr.Newman served four years, from 1965-1968 in the Augusta City Council and then
became Mayor of Augusta,Georgia serving from 1973-1981; and
WHEREAS: Mr.Newman served in the U.S.Air Force,attaining the rank of Captain after the
European Theater of operation in N. Africa in WWII; and
WHEREAS: Mr.Newman will be remembered for his efforts with the City of Augusta downtown
revitalization,construction of a civic center and passage of the local option sales tax;
and
NOW,THEREFORE,IN HONOR AND AS A MARK OF RESPECT FOR THE
MEMORY OF LEWIS"POP"A.NEWMAN,PURSUANT TO THE
AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME AS THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF
AUGUSTA,RICHMOND COUNTY,IT IS HEREBY
ORDERED: That the flag of the United States and flag of the Great State of Georgia be flown half-
staff on all City buildings and grounds until sunset, Sunday November 27th, 2016.
