HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT OF AUGUSTA, GA SUPPORTING A SURFACE PARKING LOT FOR PASSENGER VEHICLESRESOLUTION A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT OF AUGUSTA, GEORGIA SUPPORTING A SURFACE PARKING LOT FOR PASSENGER VEHICLES ON 6.27 ACRES OWNED BY AUGUSTA, GEORGIA ON THE NORTH SIDE OF REYNOLDS STREET, BETWEEN STH AND 0 STREETS AND THE TOE OF THE LEVY AND EXCLUSIVE USE OF THE TWO-LEVEL PARKING GARAGE AT FORT DISCOVERY MUSEUM. WHEREAS, the Development Authority of Richmond County d/b/a the Augusta Economic Development Authority (AEDA) is negotiating on behalf of Unisys Corporation (Unisys) to lease a substantial portion of the vacant Fort Discovery Museum at Port Royal at One 7' Street, Augusta, Georgia from its owner, and WHEREAS, if the AEDA successfully negotiates a lease on behalf of Unisys for a portion of the Fort Discovery building, Unisys will create approximately 700 new jobs for downtown Augusta; and WHEREAS, in order for AEDA to secure Unisys as a tenant at Fort Discovery, Unisys requires dedicated parking stalls for its employees; and WHEREAS, Augusta, Georgia, owns two floors of the parking garage below Fort Discovery and 6.27 acres on Reynolds Street described on a plat in the Office of the Clerk of Superior Court, Richmond County, Georgia, on Reel 301, page 270; and WHEREAS, to enable Unisys to locate to Augusta, Georgia and cerate approximately 700 new jobs and increase economic activity in downtown Augusta, this Commission desires to grant parking rights to AEDA, and to create approximately 700 new jobs; and WHEREAS, on December 17, 2013, this Commission passed a Resolution to provide such parking to enable the creation of jobs, increase security, and generate economic activity on Riverwalk. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Augusta -Richmond County Commission that: 1. In support of AEDA's efforts to enable Unisys to lease a portion of Fort Discovery and to encourage other tenants to lease space at Fort Discovery thereby increasing Riverwalk security and economic activity, including the immediate creation of 700 new jobs in downtown Augusta, the Commission hereby authorizes AEDA to have access to Augusta Georgia's 6.27 acre parcel on Reynolds Street for a surface parking lot to be constructed thereon for passenger vehicles and, further, to have exclusive use of both floors of the enclosed parking deck beneath Fort Discovery, for a period of time equal to the specified term of the Unisys lease of Fort Discovery including all renewal options. Provided, however, Augusta, Georgia sball have the option to develop its 6.27 acre parcel and relocate AEDA's surface parking to a multi -story parking lot constructed by Augusta Georgia on the 6.27 acre parcel.
