RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION REQUESTING CONGRESS TO PASS
LEGISLATION ESTABLISHING FORT GORDON AS THE SITE
OF A FUTURE NATIONAL CEMETERY
WHEREAS, the Veterans Administration National Cemetery
System currently operates 114 national cemeteries, 52 of which have reached
maximum capacity; and
WHEREAS, the median age of the veteran population will reach 65
years of age in the year 2000; and
WHEREAS, there are currently more than 700,000 veterans
residing in the State of Georgia; and;
WHEREAS, Fort Gordon serves more than 12,000 active duty
personnel and 30,000 retirees and family members; and
WHEREAS, a large Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center
is located within eight miles of Fort Gordon; and
WHEREAS, there is no burial space available In a National
Cemetery in the state of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, recent policy approved by Congress guarantees a
military funeral for any veteran who served honorably, the introduction of which is
expected to increase the demand for grave sites and ceremonial services from
the current 9% to 45% of eligible families; and
WHEREAS, Fort Gordon is home of the Signal Corps Band and is
able to provide the ceremonial details for services and observances within the
cemetery; and
WHEREAS, Fort Gordon has offered 152 acres of highly visible and
easily accessible property to be used as a National Cemetery site;
NOW THEREFORE, it is hereby resolved that the Augusta-
Richmond County Commission urges Congress to pass legislation establishing
Fort Gordon as the site of a future National Cemetery.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Augusta-Richmond County
Commission that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the United States
Congress.
