significance, the Gracewood Community, the road name change is acceptable to the minimum
requirement of66% (16 of22) of the property owners along the subject road.
WHEREAS: The existing road signs along the subject road read Gracewood Drive and
many of the residents along the subject road are using Gracewood Drive as their mailing address.
THEREFORE: Let it be known that Augusta, Georgia does hereby adopt the road

Re:
Road Name Change of Gracewood Road to Gracewood Drive
Staff met with the petitioners, Mr. & Mrs. Dennis Deas, on December 2, 1998, and discussed
with them the criteria for having a road renamed. Finding that the road renaming generally fe]]
under the guidelines for the Augusta-Richmond County Street Renaming Policy, a petition was
prepared by staff and given to Mr. & Mrs. Deas so that they could obtain the required 66%
signatures needed to rename the road.
The petition having been returned to this office, the renaming request was reviewed using the
criteria of the Augusta-Richmond County Street Renaming Policy. Staff findings are as fo]]ows:
The existing road name of Gracewood Road appears to have signi ficance in
Augusta, Georgia identifying the surrounding community. However, the 100 year
time period under which the road name could not be changed should be waived
and the second criteria should be considered since only the suffix to the road name
is being considered for change.
The road name change does appear to pass the test of continuity. It is proposed
that the entire length of the road be renamed from Gracewood Road to Gracewood
Drive and therefore, the third criteria should be considered.
Although, the proposed road name does commemorate a place of area wide,
significance, the Gracewood Community, the road name change is acceptable to
the minimum requirement of66% (16 of22) of the property owners along the
subject road.

Please note that the road name change is being requested due to the fact that the
road signs along the subject road currently read Gracewood Drive and many of the
residents along the subject road are currently using Gracewood Drive as their
mailing address.
It is therefore, staffs recommendation that the Public Safety Committee recommend to the
Augusta Commission that the road name be changed in accordance with the Augusta-Richmond
County Street Renaming Policy.
