RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION DELINEATING AUGUSTA'S SUPPORT
FOR A MOSQUITO CONTROL PROGRAM SO AS TO
PREVENT THE SPREAD OF THE WEST NILE VIRUS
WHEREAS, the West Nile Virus has emerged as an infectious disease in
the United States and poses a serious health threat to humans as well as animals;
and,
WHEREAS, the West Nile Virus seriously affects and impairs senior
adults and children frequently causing disease or death; and,
WHEREAS, the disease is primarily spread through infected mosquitoes;
and,
WHEREAS, currently there is no cure or vaccine for the disease and
prevention is the best practical defense; and,
WHEREAS, Augusta intends on taking a pro-active approach to prevent
widespread infection within its borders and surrounding areas; and,
WHEREAS, in an effort to protect and preserve the public health of
Augusta's citizens, Augusta and the Richmond County Board of Health seek to
implement a Mosquito Control Program; and,
WHEREAS, Augusta requests that the Georgia Municipal Association
and the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia solicit support from the
State of Georgia to allocate funding to help communities with this project;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE AUGUSTA-
RICHMOND COUNTY COMMISSION expresses its support for the creation
of a Mosquito Control Program.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Richmond County Legislative
Delegation is requested to support legislation allocating funds to local
governments for the implementation of such a program.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be
forwarded to the Georgia Municipal Association, the Association of County
Commissioners, and to the Richmond County Legislative Delegation.
Duly adopted this 3rd
day of September, 2002 by a vote of -2-
yeas and 0 nays with -L abstaining or absent.
