HomeMy WebLinkAboutHISTORIC DEPOT BUILDING A RESOLUTION OF THE AUGUSTA-RICHMOND COUNTY COMMISSION IN SUPPORT OF AN APPLICATION TO THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FOR AN FY 2006 TE GRANT FOR REHABILTATION OF THE HISTORIC DEPOT BUILDING WHEREAS the use of the Depot as the Historic Downtown Community Center and a Multi-Use Facility that will also house exhibits of railroad and other transportation history fulfills a critical need in the downtown area for an enclosed community event and public meeting space; WHEREAS the Depot, built in the 1850s and added to in the early 1900s, has a unique history associated with Augusta's enhanced transportation of cotton and strategic development of the South's industrial complex before, during and after the Civil War; WHEREAS the Depot is situated in a pedestrian friendly environment at the comer of the intersection of Reynolds Street and US 1 and 78; WHEREAS the Depot is located at the entrance of the cultural corridor of River Walk Augusta where thousands of tourists flock to see the Savannah River and the attractions along the waterfront; WHEREAS the Depot is across the street from the Augusta Museum of History and adjacent to the site of Fort Augusta where James Oglethorpe founded Georgia's second oldest and second largest city; WHEREAS this Commission is proud of the fact that the City of Augusta is a Preservation America city, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and has an active historic preservation commission that oversees and protects Augusta's historic resources; WHEREAS the opportunity to restore this depot to benefit historic preservation, tourism and community use is truly one that is essential for Augusta; WHEREAS the depot represents a significant time in Georgia transportation history and is located at the point where the first railroad in Georgia crossed the Savannah River from South Carolina. WHEREAS the Depot is the most visible and accessible railroad building remaining in Augusta with adequate parking space surrounding the building; and WHEREAS this city-owned historic structure would not be restored at this time but for the use of the grant funds for which this application is made. NOW, THEREFORE' THE AUGUSTA-RICHMOND COUNTY COMMISSION by and through this Resolution evidences it's support for the Augusta, Georgia FY 2006 TE Application for Rehabilitation of the Historic Depot building. AUGUSTA COMMISSION The undersigned Commissioners of Augusta, Georgia do hereby authorize the adoption of the attached Resolution IN SUPPORT OF AN APPLICATION TO THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FOR AN FY 2006 TE GRANT FOR REHABILTATION OF THE HISTORIC DEPOT BUILDING and further authorize the Mayor to sign any and all correspondence and other application documents as necessary or convenient to the application process.
