WHEREAS, the City of Augusta is in the center of a trade area of more than 1,2 million people in Georgia and South Carolina, and WHEREAS, the City of Augusta is the transportation hub of this trade area, providing linkage to interstate highways, airlines and inter city buses, and WHEREAS, the City of Augusta and Amtrak are in discussions to provide the citizens of this trade area with rail passenger service, and WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States recognizes the value of bringing this transportation alternative to Augusta by including in Section 1213 (k) of TEA-21 language that authorizes a study of the feasibility of high-speed rail passenger service from Atlanta through Augusta and Columbia to Charleston, and WHEREAS, the Congress has failed to provide the funding to accomplish this important study. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IN RESOLVED, the Augusta-Richmond Oounty Commission requests the Congress of the United States fund the Atlanta to Charleston Rail Corridor Study, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Augusta-Richmond County Commission urges members of Congress to give speedy passage to the High Speed Rail Investment Act, so that the nation's rail passenger system can be updated and completed in a timely manner, Adopted this ~ day of ;1111 AUGU T ATTEST.dllf/Ih1;fi/ CI rk ~y: l1" As its Mayor
