RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the Augusta-Richmond County Commission has firmly committed
itself to the concept of developing a regional trail system to provide an increased
quality of life for all citizens of our community; and
WHEREAS, the potential for a linkage of this trail system from Riverwalk Augusta
to the North Augusta Greenway exists; and
WHEREAS, a Savannah River Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge would serve to
physically bind the North Augusta Greenway with Riverwalk Augusta, the
Augusta Canal Natural Heritage area and the Columbia County trails system
while serving as the symbolic bond of regional cooperation in a diverse
geographic and political community; and
WHEREAS, this bridge would substantially increase the aforementioned
objective while proving a valuable economic development tool for the Central
Savannah River Area; and
WHEREAS, the Savannah River Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge has been
researched and found to have economic feasibility and broad based support
throughout the community; and
WHEREAS, such a bridge would become a symbol for the City and an icon to be
used in marketing the entire Central Savannah River Area to businesses, tourists
and future residents;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Augusta endorses the concept of
developing a pedestrian and bicycle bridge to span the Savannah river and
service as a permanent connection between Augusta and North Augusta and a
symbol of regional cooperation for the citizens of the Central Savannah River
Area.
