GEORG\~ WHEREAS, Paul D. Coverdell affectionately known by this Senate colleagues as "Mikey" for his willingness was born January 20, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa; and WHEREAS, Senator Coverdell served in the Georgia Senate from 1970 until 1989, appointed by former President George Bush as director of the Peace Corps in 1989, a position he held until 1991, and at the time of his death, served as United States Senator from Georgia since 1993 and was the first Republican to win re-election to the Senate from Georgia since Reconstruction; and WHEREAS, Senator Coverdell's soft-spoken, hard-working ways will be sorely missed by all of us who knew him and loved him; and WHEREAS, the members of the Augusta Commission were deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the untimely passing of Senator Coverdell; and WHEREAS, Senator Coverdell spent the majority of his life as a public servant and statesman serving the people of Augusta, the State of Georgia and our country; and WHEREAS, the family, friends, constituents and colleagues of Senator Coverdell, who some called a man of peace, may always remember and never, ever forget his love and concern for each of them, as he shall forever live in their hearts; and THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL VED that it is with our sincere care and concern that we, the Augusta Commission of Richmond County, Georgia, send these humble words expressing our heartfelt sympathy. May you find comfort in knowing that others care and share your loss. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a c py of family and friends of Senator Paul D.
