HomeMy WebLinkAboutAugusta Canal Augusta Richmond GA DOCUMENT NAME: I\lA~U~ Crl~ DOCUMENT TYPE: \(esa\Lct\CX\ YEAR: C\C\ BOX NUMBER: D 1) FILE NUMBER: 'L\8.9(;) NUMBER OF PAGES: \ i\ .. l' -\ RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the Augusta Canal, originally constructed in 1845 and expanded in 1875 was built for the threefold purpose of transportation, water supply and power' generation, and WHEREAS, the construction of the Canal brought economic prosperity to Augusta and helped transform the local economy from an agricultural to industrial economy, and . WHEREAS, the twelve mile canal system is remarkably intact and represents the best industrial canal system in the South and one of the best in the United States, and WHEREAS, the historic Augusta Canal has received numerous recognition's including designation on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of Interior, as a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior, as the first and only Regionally Important Resource by the State of Georgia and as a National Heritage Area by the U.S. Congress, and WHEREAS, the Master Plan for the Augusta Canal that was completed in 1993 has five basic elements including preservation, education/interpretation, conservation, recreation and economic development, and WHEREAS, the Master Plan recommends that the upper or northern end of the Canal, approximately 3.5 miles in length, remain as a natural area~ and WHEREAS, within this natural area between 1-20 and Warren Lake there is a proposed multi-family development that would place development adjacent to the canal in a manner that is inconsistent with the recommendations of the Master Plan, and WHEREAS, the Augusta Canal Authority had determined that this development would adversely affect the natural beauty of the area, the canal environment and related resources, and WHEREAS, the Canal Authority has been actively pursing the acquisition of the approximately fifty-five acres of property designated for multi-family development for incorporation into the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area and for use in a manner that is consistent with the Master Plan.
