RESOLUTION
A RESOLUTION FINDING THAT PORTIONS OF
KATHERINE STREET AND PICKENS STREET AS
SHOWN ON THE ATTACHED MAP, SHOULD BE
ABANDONED.
WHEREAS, the Augusta-Richmond County Commission has been
petitioned to consider the abandonment of a portion of Katherine
Street and Pickens Street, as shown on the attached drawing; and
WHEREAS, applicable law setting forth the procedure for
such abandonment first requires that there be a determination that
the proposed roadways for which abandonment is sought has, for any
reason, ceased to be used by the public to the extent that no
substantial public purpose is served by it, and the Augusta-
Richmond County Commission has determined that other portions of
Katherine Street and Pickens Street will remain open such that
there is no substantial public purpose served by the portions to be
closed and abandoned;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE AUGUSTA-RICHMOND
COUNTY COMMISSION it is hereby resolved as follows:
1. It is hereby determined that the portions of
Katherine Street and Pickens Street as shown on the attached
drawing, can be abandoned in that no substantial public purpose is
served by keeping said portions of these streets open;
2. The property owners located o~ either side of the
streets for which abandonment is sought shall be notified of such

determination and request for abandonment;
3. Notice of such determination and request for
abandonment shall be published in the Augusta Chronicle, the
newspaper 1n which the Sheriff's advertisements for the County are
published, once a week for a period of two weeks; and
4. A public hearing on such issue shall be conducted,
such that the said portions of Katherine Street and Pickens Street
may be deemed abandoned and thereafter disposed of in accordance
with the applicable provisions of Georgia law.
This Resolution and applicable subsequent Resolutions
relative to the abandonment of the portions of Katherine Street and
Pickens Street as shown on the attached map, shall be recorded on
the minutes of the Augusta-Richmond County Commission.

lam a lifelong resident of Augusta. The MOTetzfamily has lived at 2345 MeDo :ell
Street since 1955. ';
There is a motion on your December 2tJd agenda which 1 oppose_
The motion, item number 24, is for the city to abandon a ponion of Katherine a
Pickens Streets. Although YOl,Jf Engineering Services Committee approved; this i J m on
November 2411\, 1 had not seen or heard from anyone prior to December 1st reg 'ing this
abandonment proposal. .
I believe an issue of street abandonment affecting vital portions of two weU tray . ed
streets would have generated more inquiry on the pan of our elected officials to ek out
neighborhood! citizen input. You'd think somebody in our city govemmentldep ments
would have asked nearby residents about this proposed abandonment.
Having lived in this neigh~rhood for many of my adult years and all of my gro ! ing up
years I can tell that these streets(all or a portion) are critical to the traffic tlow 0 his
vibrant area.' '. .'
Before an ab8ndo~ent iSSlle CO~$ forward maybe the Engineering SerVices cimmittee
needs to look more IOto the followmg: . 1
. If the ASU plan is 001,10 have cars on campus then this street is even mOt crucial
to the traffic flow ai'{)und the campus, : *'
. ASU can close the gate at the Pickens @ Katherine comer to all school t! IC.
This will help ensure that citizens living in close proximity to this area , I have
less traffic spilling out into the neighborhood. <
. I have previously sought out City assistance regarding ASU's Placement~. fstreet
signs on the city right~of-way of Pickens and Katherine Streets. They ha , only
minimally complied. :
My position today and in the future is leave these two streets alone. I appreciate thiS
opponunity to address my concerns and opposition to this motion. Your urianim+us 'NO'
vote will be greatly appreciated. ~:
