POLICY AGAINST WORKPLACE VIOLENCE

AUgUsta-Rich~ond County is committed to providing a safe environment for working and
conducting b~siness. Augusta-Richmond County (ARC) will not tolerate acts of violence
committed by or against ARC employees or members of the public, while on Augusta-Richmond
County property. Any unlawful violent actions committed by employees or members of the public
while on Augusta-Richmond County property or while using ARC facilities will be prosecuted as
appropriate. Augusta intends to use reasonable legal, administrative and disciplinary procedures
to secure the workplace from violence and to reasonably protect employees and members of the
public.
ACTS OR THREATS OF VIOLENCE DEFINED
"Threats or acts of violence" include (but are not limited to) behavior or actions that a reasonable
person would: perceive as a threat against person or property. Actions or behavior that is
sufficiently severe, offensive, or intimidating and/or alters employment conditions, or creates a
hostile, abusiJe or intimidating work environment.
PROCEDURES FOR DEALING WITH ACTS OF VIOLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE

When a violent act occurs:

and occurs in the MunicipCJI Building, call the Marshall's Department at 821-2368. After 911 or
the Marshall's Department has been contacted, contact an immediate supervisor and the Risk

. If the situation does not constitute an emergency. Contact. your immediate supervisor, the
appropriate Department Director, and the Risk Management M~nager.
Any report of violence will be evaluated immediately and confidentially, and appropriate action will
be taken, where possible, in order to protecUhe employee from further violence. Appropriate
disciplinary action will be taken when it is determined that an Augusta-Richmond County employee
has committed an act of violence. Where such behavior is ex~ibited by Augusta-Richmond County

employee saf~ty are of concern, Department Directors and supervisors should evaluate the
workplace an~ make appropriate recomme~~ationsregarding. a reasonable response. Additionally,
supervisors are encouraged to consult with the Risk Management Manager and/or Employee
Assistance Prbgram about appropriate resolution of instances of workplace violence. Each
employee of ~ugusta-Richmond County and every person on Augusta-Richmond County property
is encouraged: to report threats or acts of physical violence of which he/~he is aware.

Workplace violence shall constitute a violation of Augusta-Richmond County policies and
procedures manual. Violation by an employee of any provision of this policy may lead to
disciplinary action (up to and including termination). .
