Nepotism is hiring and/or showing employment or advancement preference to a member of your family, your immediate household or your relative in disregard of the qualifications of others better suited for that same position. Terms member of family, household, relatives include: a person for whom an employee has been assigned legal responsibility, parent, step-parent, child, step-child, son-in-law or daughter-in-law, brother, sister, spouse, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, grandparent, grandchild, brother-in- law or sister-in-law, a guardianship capacity, or persons living in the same household. Is nepotism allowed? No. To avoid conflicts of interest and the appearance of favoritism or bias and to enhance supervision, security and morale, Augusta generally prohibits the employment of relatives within the same department. For the same reasons, spouses of employees or employees who become related by marriage may not be employed under each other's supervision or in the same department. What is the purpose of an anti-nepotism policy? It is the goal of Augusta to employ the most qualified individuals. The protection of the individual as well as the government requires that certain safeguards against conflicts of interest, whether real or perceived be implemented. This policy is intended to reinforce Augusta's commitment to employment practices that create and maintain constructive working relationships and which reflect our commitment to employment practices that are effective and are consistently applied to all employees and applicants for employment. Are relatives or members of your family encouraged to work for the City? Members of your family, members of your immediate household or your relatives will be considered for employment except when 1) their position or your position would exercise supervisory, appointment, grievance adjustment, dismissal or disciplinary authority or influence, 2) if you or the employee would audit, verify, receive or be entrusted with this government's money or property, 3) where Augusta must limit hiring to avoid conflict of interest with customers, agencies, or others with whom Augusta conducts business, or 4) where Augusta must limit hiring to avoid employment discrimination, personnel policy conflicts or related problems. The Human Resources Department will not knowingly place an employee in a situation where he/she is supervised by a member of his/her family, immediate household or relative, or where favoritism, interpersonal conflict, lack of productivity, efficiency or other adverse employment conditions may occur. .. -. --......fWiI. IJUJ.J.rler CLERK OF COMMISSION .; What happens if individuals become related during the course of employment? If the situations occurs where art employee marries or becomes related by marriage to another individual in the department, the employees will have 30 days to decide which one ofthem will leave. If the employees do not decide, then Human Resources will arrange for a transfer of the employee who was last hired to a comparable position in another department within 60 days. If the transfer is offered and declined by the employee, all continued rights of employment shall cease and such employee will be separated. This policy shall not be retroactive, unless any of the above adverse conditions are being practiced. This policy will be applied in accordance with applicable state and federal law and any employee who violates the policy will be subject to discipline up to and including termination.
