The unit will work cohesively 'n order to ensure that any coneems Or Questions that ~Ictims may have are d ress.eel prompUy while the case moves through the court system. There Is no other system like ours ,n Our area or In the s r undlng areas. This sy&tem has proven to be very effedlve in prosecuting DOmestic VIOlence caSes. 2. Goals, objecth,es, iv/ties We hope to continue to pro i a unique service In that the victims have an opportunity to speak with a state court judge and prosecutor during bond h . s to provIde a first hand account of the events that led up to the bond hearing and to allow the court the opportunity to de Ine the lethality of the case. Outside of the court room, general advocaey services including dis5ernination of informatio varding victims' rights, prevention of abuse. and referral of services by other agencies. and follow contact will be ongoi ntll victim Is safe. Ll$tly, to continue to offer community education on crime issues involving domestic violence and its p ntton and to expand community outreach to raise ltWarene~ of dome$tic violence in diverse culturaVethnic settings. 3. Delays/obstacles e untered implementing this project There are many obstacles a can delay help for the victim and probably the hardest is a scared. recanting victim due to the fear that the perpetrator will t out of Jail and hurt them. An effective response has been the advocates consistent reassurance of safety along positive actions from the eoutt such as high bonds, detailed restaining orders. and referrals to safe shelters. Another obstacle is the vieti and witnesses that stay on the move end do not keep us Informed of their current addresses which hinders the prosecuto bility to convict the perpetrator. This obstacle can be minimized somewhat due to the follow- up contact made to the victi nd witness by the advocate via phone. mail and sometimes personal visits helps to keep up... to-cIate records concerning e case . The third most important ob Ie Is poorly wrltten reports by law enforcement officers. Law enforcement training on evidence gath$ring and detailed repo riling by Our office has helped to minimize vague 3 or 4 sentence reports. The fourth obstacle is an uni ed public that has no sympathy for the victim and their circumstances. Our participating in community events on a regu ba$i$ has helped to bring awareness to citiz.ens in the community along '!ith ~ancling out . brochures. personal safety p a cards. and victims' rights cards.
