Thank you for your letter of October 23, 1996 regarding the appropriation of
$10,000 in Amendment 73 Funding approved at the October 1, 1996 Council-
Commission Meeting for the Fifth Annual Boshears Memorial Fly-In.
Those funds will be used to defray the considerable start-up operational costs
associated with the Fly-In. You will be pleased to know that because we enjoyed two
days of fine weather, over 15,000 area residents attended the event.
In addition to the actual air show activities, 600 Boy Scouts camped out on the field
at the air show Saturday and Sunday.
Another 1,100 middle school students participated in the Boshears Field Day
preceding the Fly-In on Thursday, October 17th. Students were treated to eight
stations including presentations by the FAA Air Traffic Controllers at Bush Field,
WRDW-12's Bob Smith on the impact weather has on aviation, Civil Air Patrol,
Betty Holmes and Dudley Bowen, Sr. on Daniel Field history, Experimental Aircraft
Association on aircraft building, ham radio communications and so on. The
Boshears Memorial Fly-In committee arranged this as the public service aspect of
the event.
The Committee paid for over 100 area hotel rooms (in addition to the 60 donated
rooms) to house performers and support staff from outside the area. It is of interest
to note the Fly-In was executed entirely by the 30-man volunteer committee, assisted
by another 300 volunteers.

Enclosed is a copy of last year's financials; a copy of this year's financials will be
forwarded to you as soon as all affairs in conjunction with this year's show are
settled.
We wish to thank the Council-Commission for their on-going generous support of
this event as it grows to become the largest airshow in Georgia, and indeed, the
Southeast. Much of what the public enjoys would not be possible without their
support.
As well, we are grateful for the support we directly receive from Augusta-Richmond
county departments and related agencies in staging the Fly-In. These include the
Police and Fire personnel, MCG medics team, the Clean Community Task Force and
the probationers who take care of trash disposal, Trees and Parks who keep the
Field mowed and free of fire ants, runway sweepers and so on. The list is
considerable and all contribute heavily to assuring a growing event we can all be
proud of having in Augusta.
Please accept our sincerest thanks for all the help Augusta-Richmond County
deserves for making the Fifth Annual Boshears Memorial Fly-In a success,
Best regards,
~tfcltd~
