1. Updates:
Earth Day at Phinizy Swamp was a successful event. 4 dogs were adopted
and 16 pets were adopted from PetSmart on the same day.
Spay & Neuter program: Mrs. Broady stated that Dr. Poppy has performed
54 of 300 sterilization procedures and there is an issue with people not
showing up for appointments. Jennifer suggested in the future requiring a
$5-$10 fee to hold an appointment.
Play for Life Shelter Program. Linda discussed the program. She observed
the program in Aiken and thought it was a great program but it is very
detail oriented. She would like to implement a program at AAS. She will
send the manual and link to the website for members to review. The cost
of trainers coming to AAS is $1000. The Aiken shelter received a grant
from the Farm Foundation.
Classical Music: The Augusta Symphony will record classical music to be
played at the shelter. Dorothy Williams and her husband plan on setting up
the system in order for this to be done. Ms. Broady has coordinated this
with the City I.T. Department.
Volunteer database: AAS is working with the IT department to set up a
volunteer database to help track volunteer hours. In the future the
applications will also be directed to the Friends of Augusta Animal
Services via email.
Volunteer Orientation: There are plans for volunteer orientation, tentative
date is 05/14/16. A power point has been put together to help train
volunteers.
Friends and Family Day: Many rescues have confirmed attendance, along
with face painters, DJ, Parks & Recreation Activity bus, CERT, SRS
Ecology Lab, Mosquito Control, and others. We still need donations for
hotdog buns and baked goods. Each board member volunteered to bag
baked goods for the event.
An email will be sent to invite commissioners to the event.
Ordinance pamphlets will be ready to hand out at the event.
Signage was suggested for the Eco lab. Volunteers are needed to direct
traffic, help with set up, adoptions, etc.
2.New Business:
#Adopt Augusta: #Adopt Augusta was discussed. This is going to link AAS
to different social media sites to share events and information.
Walking App: If you download the app it will donate funds to the charity of
your choice depending on how much you walk your dog, funds would go to
The Community Foundation, Friends of Augusta Animal Services donation
fund.
Resignation: Dr. Tara Poppy has turned in her resignation, she will work
part time at 2 days a week. Mrs. Broady stated the position has been
posted.
Distemper: There are 2 confirmed distemper cases at the shelter. The
dogs have been quarantined and Dr. Poppy and consultant Dr. Sandra
Newbury, of the University of Wisconsin are confident that no other
animals are affected. The Georgia Department of Agriculture was
contacted, visited the shelter, completed their report and it was decided
that there is no need to stop movement at this time.
New Employees: 3 new employees will start next week, 2 kennel
technicians and 1 field officer. At the moment there are only 4 field
th
officers. Mr. Edward Jefferson retired on March 30.
Meeting was adjourned at 6:50pm
