Business License Renewal - Required Documents
Department:Planning & Development
Caption:For Information: Required documents for Occupation Tax /
Business License renewals.
Background:The business license renewal season has begun. Businesses
located in Augusta are required to file certain documents with
Planning & Development, Business License Division in order to
renew their business license. Occupation Tax Bills will be mailed
in late December, the Tax payment is due by January 31st, and the
2014 Occupation Tax Certificate will be issued upon receiving the
required documents and payment.
Analysis:The Occupation Tax code was recently amended to provide for an
administrative fee that will be charged to businesses that do not
submit required documents on time for business license renewals.
It is important that we receive all three documents: • Gross
Revenue – Business License Renewal Application. The business’s
gross revenue is reported on this form, unless the business is a
professional classification and then the tax is a flat rate. The
Occupation Tax is based on the prior twelve months gross
revenue. • SAVE Affidavit. The SAVE affidavit (Systematic
Alien Verification for Entitlements) is a document used to verify
citizenship status of people applying through the City for a local
public benefit; i.e. a business license, alcohol license, taxi license,
etc. • E-Verify Affidavit. E-Verify is an Internet based system
operated by the Department of Homeland Security in partnership
with the Social Security Administration that allows participating
employers to electronically verify the employment eligibility of
their newly hired employees. State law requires that every private
employer that contracts for the physical performance of services
(i.e. business license) with a county must be registered with and
use the E-Verify program.
