Background:On April 16, 2019 the Augusta Commission approved tasking staff with preparing a resolution proclaiming May 3rd as James Day in Augusta, GA and for staff to have ready for the Commission to consider for approval on April 30th as requested by Commissioner John Clarke. Analysis: Financial Impact: Alternatives: Recommendation: Funds are Available in the Following Accounts: REVIEWED AND APPROVED BY: Cover Memo Item # 4 RESOLUTION RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY THIRD AS JAMES BROWN DAY IN AUGUSTA, GEORGIA WHEREAS, James Brown was a music legend, left an indelible mark on the annals of contemporary music history, continuously refining and developing his compelling performances over the course of decades of stardom and is known world-wide as the “King of Soul,” “The Hardest-Working Man in Show Business,” and the “Godfather of Soul”; and WHEREAS, James Brown was born on May 3, 1933; and WHEREAS, James Brown grew up in and called Augusta home; and WHEREAS, James Brown’s 110 entries on the R&B Billboard 100 ranks as the second most entries in history and hits such as “I Feel Good”, “Living in America” and “Say it Loud I’m Black and I’m Proud,” continue to bring listening pleasure to loyal fans throughout this nation; and WHEREAS, James Brown was the world’s premier entertainer, the consummate artist whose voice has inspired millions of music enthusiasts the world over across music genres and was named Rolling Stones’ 7th Most influential Artist of All Time; and WHEREAS, James Brown won a number of prestigious awards and honors including: Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, five time Grammy Hall of Fame Winner, three time Grammy awards winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee; BET Lifetime Achievement Award, American Music Award of Merit, Kennedy Center Honors; and WHEREAS, James Brown’s dedication to musical excellence was matched only by his social activism and concern for those in need. NOW, THEREFORE, the Augusta, Georgia Commission does hereby approve this Resolution proclaiming May 3rd of each year as James Brown Day in Augusta, Georgia and authorizes the issuance of a Proclamation to commemorate James Brown Day.
