Our meeting began at approximately 5:35pm starting out with nominations and electing of officers for the board. The votes were unanimous in each category. New officers are: Chairman-BB Langham Vice Chair-Julie Tillery Secretary-Lorna Barrett We discussed the fact that we need more appointees, and will be looking to find more people to join our board. Mr. Bill Berry was discussed, as he was interested. However, he is unable to attend on Wednesday evenings, as he has other obligations for the same time frame. Commissioner Mason will not appoint anyone for our board. Commissioner Williams has stated that he would appoint someone if he was given a name. Legislative members are still in need. We all agreed to seek interested parties. We discussed the letter about Emergency Training and that we are all invited to participate in the exercise planning meeting scheduled for Monday, February 18, 2013, from 1pm to 4pm at Julian Smith BBQ Pit located at 87 Milledge Road in Augusta. Additionally, the ‘mock drill’ that has been scheduled for Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 9am til 12 noon that day is open to all members and all volunteers we can gather. It will take place at Craig Houghton School (1001 Fourth St, and the Exhange Club Fairgrounds at 301 Hale St). An assessment meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Julian Smith BBQ from 1pm-4pm, to which all members are urged to attend. Sonia Bennett has requested RSVP’s 706-790-6836 or sbennett@augustaga.gov The subject of licensing dogs and cats was brought up and tabled until further notice. The subject of TNR was brought up and tabled until further notice. Discussion led to the City Attorney’s office and their slow handling of the ordinance changes that have been proposed. Andrew McKenzie is the lead attorney, and it was suggested that after our next meeting (where we plan to discuss the ordinances) we send the legal office a letter asking to hear back from them by a specific date as to the status of the ordinances. We discussed going to a commission meeting as a group and asking for their unified help after we put forth a newly revised set of changes to the ordinances. th We also discussed inviting all of the commissioners and the Mayor to our May 15 meeting, and ask them to RSVP. We set the date for the next meeting for March 27, 2013, with the plan to discuss the ordinances for the full meeting. Each member is to read the current ordinances and the ones proposed last year, and bring ideas and thoughts to the next meeting. If you do not have a copy of these, Ms Broady will provide them. Addendum-Lorna Barrett contacted each member, Ms Broady and Ms Crisler, and asked if it was possible to change the date of this next meeting to March 20,2013, due to a previous engagement. At this time, all respondents have accepted this change with no problem. Yet to hear back from Ms. Tillery. However, since this is a majority, the meeting will be set for March 20, 2013. Ms. Barrett brought in a flyer about Just One More Day, to give to Ms Broady, and Ms. Broady said they were already planning on it. Ms. Barrett asked about the “HEAT” signs being made and posted, and Ms. Broady said she would have to go higher in the chain of command, to Mr. Russell to find out if they can be made. Discussion brought the idea of starting with a smaller number of them than we really need, and posting them first at parks, and other public places to get the word out, and then post more as we go along. We discussed the water bill insert, and its cost. The cost is only $250 which Augusta Humane Society president Delores Robinson said she would pay. However, the cost to stuff the inserts into envelopes being $650 is difficult to budget. Possibilities of splitting the bill were discussed, perhaps splitting the total of $900 between Augusta Humane Society, That’s What Friends Are For, Inc and Augusta Animal Services might work. We will research and return to the topic at the May meeting. Discussion of adoption events where we could coordinate several events together to draw more people was discussed, Pendleton King Park was one location, however, the idea of having it at the Animal Services facility on Mack Lane brought the idea of getting more people to come out and see where it is, and get a better feeling from all the activity. Possible dates did not get discussed, but late fall would give us time to plan, and get more rescues, vendors, sponsors, etc. involved. Facebook was brought up as a good place to put animals for adoption, but Ms Crisler said she is already doing that. Ms Crisler said the are seeking more volunteers to help with weekend adoptions at Petsmart. Forward any interested parties to her. Members asked for a contact list. This is as much as I have. Please feel free to email me additions or corrections to this list.
