Mr. Langham asked that we plan that meetings shall last no longer than 7:30pm and it was accepted by all present. It was announced that Diane Downs would no longer be coming to the meetings and taking the notes, and now the job falls to the secretary, Lorna Barrett. Ms. Crisler gave details of the Emergency Summit. Mr. Jefferson also gave details from the summit. These remarks included: getting as many volunteers as possible, individuals as well as businesses and civic organizations such as FFA, 4H, cattle, horse and kennel groups, rescues, feed stores, pet stores, grocery stores, churches, united way, vets, to name a few. They discussed collecting supplies and storing them at AAS and finding other places to store items such as crates, cages, litter boxes, industrial hoses, nozzles, food, dishes, towels. Mobile storage was brought up, such as trailers to use. The idea of chicken wire was discussed to cover the kennels for dogs. They suggested assigning tasks and the need for people able to take pictures of animals and their owners at intake, doing a daily head count, staff sign in and out, having a public information person to be the laison with the media, and having a safety person. There will be a 6 week training session starting January 15, 2013, on Tuesday’s from 6-9pm with EMA. We need to find out how many can attend the classes, and plan on all advisory board members and as many of the volunteers on our lists, attending this session. It was brought up that the people that volunteered to train with us for emergency preparedness should be recognized for volunteering, and notified of the date and time of the classes. Delores Robinson of the Augusta Humane Society volunteered to pay for the informational flyer to go back into the water bills the next time. The plan is to have them done and inserted on a quarterly basis, the first having been in October 2012. It was announced that a sale price of $50.00 (reduced from $65, $75 and $85) will be in effect over the holidays if approved by the administrator, Mr. Russell. Randy Wishard, with the Public Health Dept., was introduced as a prospective advisory board member, representing district 2, for Mr. Corey Johnson, pending the next commission meeting and acceptance. Along with setting the time frame of advisory board meetings to be kept between 5:30 and 7:30pm, it was decided that meeting should be held every two months instead of quarterly. However, with the holidays coming up, the next meeting is scheduled for January 30, 2013. Mr. Maccario announced that he would be stepping down since he is moving to Las Vegas to open a new Heartsong clinic. We will need to fill the position of legislative appointee, and Bill Berry was discussed for this position since his application is already with Ms. Bonner. The suggestion was made for members to contact legislators to help appoint and confirm the two needed appointees. Some of the names given are: B. Sims, Q. Murphy, W. Howard, H. Davis, G. Frazier and Senators Stone and Davis. Advisory board members that have not been at meetings for quite some time were voted off the board: Diane Moss of district 2, Barbara Jean Cooksey of district 4, and Michael Meyers of district 9. The law department printed a draft of the ordinance about protecting pets left in cars, the draft was passed out to each meeting attendee. It will be up for approval at the next commission meeting, the date of which was uncertain, as it falls on election day. We will have to confirm this so as many members as possible can attend the meeting. Mr. Langham told Ms Barrett that she should not have called out the names of the commissioners that had not made appointments to the advisory board in a published article, for fear the commissioners would respond negatively to the Animal Services Department. Several subjects were brought up and discussed briefly and tabled until the next meeting in January. These include: Licensing, TNR, Super Pet Adoption Events. Places to hold a pet adoption event were suggested-the Animal Services facility, PetSmart parking lot, Pendleton King Park, Julian Smith Casino, as thth well as possible dates, like May 4 and 5. Everyone agreed to collect more information on these topics so that we will be prepared to have intelligent discussions on these topics.
