COMMITTEE ROOM - February 25, 2002
12:30 P. M.
PRESENT: B. Young, Mayor, W. Mays, Chairman, U. Bridges, R. Colclough, B. Kuhlke
members, Commissioners A. Cheek, T. Boyles, G. Kolb, Administrator, J. Wall,
Attorney, D. Copenhagen, Southeastern L. Bonner, Clerk of Commission.
MEDIA: S. Eidson, Metro Spirit, H. Williams, Augusta Chronicle, and G. Eskola,
Channel 6.
1. Consider a request from Mr. Ed McIntyre to name the Senior Citizen Center
in the BeUemeade area the Henry Brigham Senior Center.
Mr. Young: Just as a point of clarification, I spoke with Mr. McIntyre this
morning at the time he sent this to us he was unaware that a petition was being
circulated in the neighborhood. He has indicated that he will back off on his
request in deference to the petition coming from the neighborhood.
I
Mr. George Mitchell, Belle Terrace, Gordon Terrace and Terrace Manor
Neighborhood Associations: I am speaking on be half of the petitioners. We have
petitions requesting to have the name changed on Belle Terrace Park to the Henry
H. Brigham Community Center. Also, along with that we're requesting that the
other buildings in that park be changed as well. The Senior Center be changed to
H.H. Brigham Building. The swim center be changed to H.H. Brigham Swim
Center and the main building be changed to H.H. Brigham Community Complex.
Mr. Kuhlke: I move approval of the name change.
Mr. Mays: Second. I first talked with Mr. Beck in reference to the petition and
the material that Mr. Mitchell had submitted. In addition to that I believe Mr.
McIntyre talked with the Mayor in reference to the item that's on the agenda.
Prior to that, other than just the Senior Center the whole complex is what was on
the original plan. This is something that we had talked about as Commissioners
not officially. I have talked to most of the Commissioners and everybody is on
the same accord in reference to where should go with this.
Mr. Beck: At the will of the Commission we stand ready to honor Mr. Brigham in
whichever method you choose for that park.
Mr. Kuhlke: I think we should add to that motion when everything is done that we
should have an appropriate ceremony to honor Mr. Brigham.
Motion carries unanimously.
I
2.
Receive as information update from APT regarding the sale of weekly and
monthly fare passes for passenger use on March 4, 2002.
Mr. Johnson: The approval of the GFI, Genfare Farebox system upgrade was
made at a previous Commission meeting. This system upgrade allows passengers
to use a durable swipe card with an expiration period encoded by the farebox after
the first use. We have tested the use of the passes in the fareboxes and are
satisfied with its efficiency.
I
Mr. Young: Does tins eliminate the need for transfers?
Mr. Johnson: Yes.
Mr. Mays: To follow up on the Mayors' question in reference to the transfers. I
know that eliminates your need to have them. Does this clear up where we were
in reference to the question about transfers in terms ofthose who ride the multiple
routes and what that would do in terms of the total fare prices that they would pay
as opposed to not being able to have transfers.
Mr. Johnson: Nothing has changed as far as the way we do business right now.
We still have the base fare for $1.00 and if a person wants a transfer they can still
buy a transfer. This is just something to enhance what we have.
Mr. Mays: So move for approval.
Mr. Kuhlke: Second.
I
Motion carries unanimously.
3. Update/report regarding the acquisition of Greenspace property. (Referred
from February 20 Commission)
Deke Copenhagen gave a report at to the status of the Greenspace property.
Mr. Kuhlke: So move for approval.
Mr. Colclough: Second.
Motion carries unanimously.
ADJOURNMENT: With no further business to discuss the meeting was adjourned.
