PRESENT: B. Young, Mayor; R. Colclough, Chairman; J. Brigham, S. Shepard, M.
Williams members; A Cheek, B. Kuhlke, Commissioners, T. Boyles, B. Hankerson,
Commissioners-elect; J. Wall, Attomey, W. Hornsby, Deputy Administrator, S, Walker,
L&I Dept, R. Berry, Sheriff's Dept, L. Bonner, Clerk of Commission.
MEDIA: S. Eidson, Metro Spirit, and R. Jones. Augusta Focus.
Presentation by Rev. Silas Hawkins, Jr. of Neighborhood Youth and Adult Ministry
regarding the East Augusta Recreation Center.
Rev. Hawkins: I'm here today to express my concerns about the East Augusta
Recreation Center. The center is not being operated properly. We need an employee of
the Recreation Department there to supervise the center, somebody with some control
and responsibility who would know how to handle the children and supervise programs.
It's only open for a short period of time. There is no basketball court or playground for
the children and only one pool table. -
:1
Mr. Beck: As you are aware we did enter into a partnership with our department
and the East Augusta Neighborhood Association a year and a half ago for the indoor
operation of the Eastview Recreation Center. There has been a new building that has
been constructed there that opened in August Actually, there was no building there from
January through the first of August while the new center was under construction. Rev.
Hawkins did mention the lack of a playground. We do have playground that you did
award a bid on and it will be going into the new center within the month. With us today
is Mr. Sam Crowder, representing the neighborhood association. Our staff person who is
in charge and working with the East Augusta Neighborhood Association is Ms. Joyce
Downs, District Supervisor.
Mr. Sam Crowder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the East Augusta
Neighborhood Association: We are in a growing stage. I agree with Mr. Hawkins there is
a lot that needs to be done at the center. We've only had the building for a few months
and we were not knowledgeable. We had a basketball court there before the building was
tom down and we requested that the court be gone. Because every evening there was a
gathering and they were doing a lot of things on the court. If we need help from the
Recreation Dept we can get it
I
Mr. Beard: I understand Mr. Hawkins concerns and I have listened to several
peoples concerns down there. I do want the committee to know that is the district that I
represent. I have worked with Mr. Crowder and the neighborhood association as a
principal at East Augusta Middle school and as a commissioner. I think the
neighborhood association should be the ones to decide what they want down there. I
think Rev. Hawkins should take his concerns to the neighborhood association.
