Oliver, J. Wall, Legal Counsel; R. Few, Fire Department; P. Tucker, EMA Director. ALSO PRESENT: Sylvia Cooper, Augusta Chronicle; Stacy Eidson, Metro Spirit; Lena Bonner, Clerk of Commission, Belinda Brown of the Clerk's Office. A request from the Fire Chief to approve adoption of Minimum Performance Standards for the Fire Department. MR. SHEPARD: So move. MR MAYS: Second. Mr. Kuhlke: Do you foresee any problems in doing this, people that can't meet the minimum performance and you can't transfer them, do you anticipate as you initiate this that you will have some folks in your department that you can't allow to stay in the department? Chief Few: It may create a problem if I don't. The problem is that the only way we know that we are getting our engine companies or ladder companies to function out on the fire scene is that we will have to test them in a non combat situation rather than wait until they get out on the fire ground and then assume they can't do the job. I have put in every measure that you can think of and in fact we will be able to go back and do remedial classes. One thing about this is that the State requires us to be able to meet these standards. I'm only implementing some of the State standards and a few more that perhaps, we have to perform if we got out there on a day to day basis. We have an excellent training department that if someone can't meet the standards now can go bac~ and option back to the Fire Department and go through the training department and they will bring them back up to standard. Mr. Oliver: I am totally supportive of the standards. Obviously you don't want a firefighter out there who can't meet the standards. I feel that we have to recognize that the!:e is a possibility that there may be some people that may not meet them. Motion carried unanimously.
