The Committee first considered the matter of automatic payroll deductions from urban firefighters' salaries. Chief Maddox: This fund was begun under Chief Meads in 1962 and is voluntary and the funds collected are used for the United Fund and to send fruit baskets to the widows of firemen each year on Christmas Eve. Firemen volunteer to deliver the baskets and no one has to contribute if they don't want to. If you wish to discontinue this practice, I have no problem with that. Mr. Todd: I think we should recognize and contribute to the United Way as our charity. Mr. Kuhlke: I move that we accept this as information, that we direct the Clerk to make the new Administrator aware of some concerns here and for him to work on establishing a unified policy Countywide on how these type things will be handled. Mr. Leverett: We requested bids for a single contract for the Jail, the Stockade and RCCI. We received bids and are recommending the bid of Correction Medical Services.
